HP Twitter Wisher & Other Updates

DUBAI, U.A.E.  It’s been quite busy here for the past few months.  We’ve built up quite an interesting portfolio that constantly bridge the gap between online and offline platforms.

But before we begin to discuss, let’s see what we’ve been missing out on here in the desert:

Now that we’re done with wishful thinking, let’s see what was implemented here in the Gulf.  First we go to Qatar, where we kicked off our energy binge:

The magic in these books is within the interaction itself.  It does not use the usual camera-based tracking methods commonly employed the world over.  Instead, it uses the same capacitive interaction techniques that allow users to interact with the books without any obvious tracking devices within the vicinity. There are numerous applications, especially in retail, that can utilize the same technology – whether to activate visual displays or for other more functional purposes.

Up next in our energy tour, we implemented a multitouch videowall for the World Future Energy Summit 2012 in Abu Dhabi.  Likewise, the video wall came along with remade content for the interactive books.

The method tracking for the videowall is brilliant.  It is barely affected by lighting conditions and the accuracy is just spot on.  With proper content development and an understanding of “layer-based” tracking, this instrument has huge potential.

Simultaneously, we were drawing close to the new year.  As such, one of our clients, Y&R Dubai, had a crazy idea of implementing a twitter balloon campaign for HP. Thus, the HPtwitterwisher.com project was born:

This project ran for a total of 24 hours but reached  54 countries.  It also reached Mashable and other international news outlets.

While some other projects are still under wraps (therefore, you must wait), the latest install that we implemented was for Intel at Jacky’s in the Dubai Mall.  Check out this virtual mannequin:

Bubble Pop Camera-based Game

In an isolated area just off the desert in Dubai, something of a Roald Dahl-ish fancy takes place.   Kids (and adults!) come to this factory of sweets looking for Oompa Loompas only to find something more interesting – themselves!

Themselves in a video game!  In this designed experience, the agency involved designed multiple interactive spaces (both digital and otherwise) for visitors to learn more about healthy (chocolatey) eating and the importance of being active.

3M Virtual Mannequin

3M recently opened their Innovation Center in Dubai with a virtual mannequin greeting visitors at the lobby.  Check out the video below:

Hardware integration comes with the territory. In some cases, this is enough to create a truly immersive experience. As was the case for our 3M installation where the Virtual Mannequin was crafted using purely hardware logic. In this particular case, the client requirements were quite simple: they wanted a projection mapped mannequin that begins to talk once a person passes through. Simple, right?

No, after finalization, the client wanted more A.I. like presence verification, multiple video feeds and queuing. Now since the initial brief was simple detection – the solution was a hardware-based motion detection schema.  With the new requirements, some would say that the best way to go to implement a software-based logic.

Here comes the challenge: budget was locked into the initial quote and we have to implement these additional requirements nevertheless (with the timeframe shorter).  Adding logic programming would’ve been the easier way out but that would entail that we change the entire hardware already installed.  As such, our chief engineer decided to customize the hardware using only a soldering iron, a few additional components and dedication.

The solution worked out for all parties.  The mannequin functioned as it should (albeit additional requirements), the Innovation Center opened with the Mannequin sensing and welcoming guests seamlessly, client/s are happy and we: tired but satisfied.

Gesture-based Interaction

Surface is an example of gesture-recognition computing.

Gesture recognition is a topic in computer science and language technology with the goal of interpreting human gestures via mathematical algorithms. Gestures can originate from any bodily motion or state but commonly originate from the face or hand. Current focuses in the field include emotion recognition from the face and hand gesture recognition. Many approaches have been made using cameras and computer vision algorithms to interpret sign language. However, the identification and recognition of posture, gait, proxemics, and human behaviors is also the subject of gesture recognition techniques.[1]

Gesture recognition can be seen as a way for computers to begin to understand human body language, thus building a richer bridge between machines and humans than primitive text user interfaces or even GUIs (graphical user interfaces), which still limit the majority of input to keyboard and mouse.

It can be applied to marketing and advertising solutions but recent advancements have been made for industrial and government purposes.  A recent TED event showcases these advancements and it is AWESOME!

Immersive Media For Home and Industrial Interiors

Some examples of how immersive media is applied in everyday life and things (hobbies rather).

The indoor golf is a concept that has been fine-tuned over the years and is now a more sophisticated gaming application of immersive media – a perfect example of mixing the virtual with the real.  It features double tracking technology that not only detects the direction of the ball, but also the spin that you put on it and the velocity of the ball.  It’s perfect for personal, commercial and promotional applications.

On the other hand, the interactive mirror is a step further into a more purposeful use of ubiquitous media. Developing technology that melts with the environment is key in properly integrating immersive media into everyday lives.  There are quite a number of possibilities with this kind of application: gaming, retail, multitouch, POI, POS, etc.
