A long overdue update on what’s been ticking at PixelPlusMedia’s Dubai Offices.

(Part 1 of 3… or more)

Hello folks!

We can’t believe that it’s been well over a year of putting off writing another blog entry.  Rest assured, it’s well justified as we had been keeping ourselves busy creating and developing new products and experiences for marketing and advertising in Dubai.

Busy thinking of new things.

Busy thinking of new things.

Creative technology (as they call it) has been pushing the boundaries of live activations and retail installations in Dubai (so we hope).

Let’s start it off little by little – starting with 2013.

Below, we have our award-winning (Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, Dubai Lynx, The Effies and others – Google it, Baby!) product deployment for Y&R Dubai.  The idea (otherwise known as The Headline News Cup Sleeve for Tim Horton’s) was quite simple yet effective – read the latest news along with your fresh cup of coffee.

How was it done?  See below:

Next up, we worked on yet another great idea by Y&R Dubai! The LR4 Escape Key (as we found out) was a real epic in terms of production.  Back in the dark ages when hipsters were less techie, we were already well into product prototyping (or 3D printing).  Enter video:

Awesome as that was, these creative types in Dubai kept coming up with crazy new ideas – all of which, we were happy to oblige them with.

———> Ooops! We’re over 200 words! We’ll put up another post soon!

HP Twitter Wisher & Other Updates

DUBAI, U.A.E.  It’s been quite busy here for the past few months.  We’ve built up quite an interesting portfolio that constantly bridge the gap between online and offline platforms.

But before we begin to discuss, let’s see what we’ve been missing out on here in the desert:

Now that we’re done with wishful thinking, let’s see what was implemented here in the Gulf.  First we go to Qatar, where we kicked off our energy binge:

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/33845816]

The magic in these books is within the interaction itself.  It does not use the usual camera-based tracking methods commonly employed the world over.  Instead, it uses the same capacitive interaction techniques that allow users to interact with the books without any obvious tracking devices within the vicinity. There are numerous applications, especially in retail, that can utilize the same technology – whether to activate visual displays or for other more functional purposes.

Up next in our energy tour, we implemented a multitouch videowall for the World Future Energy Summit 2012 in Abu Dhabi.  Likewise, the video wall came along with remade content for the interactive books.

The method tracking for the videowall is brilliant.  It is barely affected by lighting conditions and the accuracy is just spot on.  With proper content development and an understanding of “layer-based” tracking, this instrument has huge potential.

Simultaneously, we were drawing close to the new year.  As such, one of our clients, Y&R Dubai, had a crazy idea of implementing a twitter balloon campaign for HP. Thus, the HPtwitterwisher.com project was born:

This project ran for a total of 24 hours but reached  54 countries.  It also reached Mashable and other international news outlets.

While some other projects are still under wraps (therefore, you must wait), the latest install that we implemented was for Intel at Jacky’s in the Dubai Mall.  Check out this virtual mannequin:

We’ll be implementing a few more of these around Dubai.  In the meantime, watch out for updates on this post!

The meet was addressed by a galaxy of scintillating speakers and media personalities led by Reg Athwal– Co-founder of One TVO Abu Dhabi UAE. He mesmerized the audience with his engaging message on how to ‘Unleash Media DNA’ and asked for self assessment of inner strengths and role fit within us and then leverage it to play media to the perfection.

The next speaker Mr.Abbas Alidina- renowned columnist and frequent contributor to the diffusion of social network media in the Middle East revealed that face book is increasingly penetrating eh Middle East and in many gulf countries, have reached as high as 35% of the population. Through his examples and statistics he showed how valuable is the social media for the region. He cited several case studies of successful users of social network media in large and small sectors.

Integrating the emerging technology with media, Mr. Jose Garcellano of PixelPlus Media introduced the new concepts of ‘Immersive media and augmented reality to attract, engage and sell’ to the market especially to the attention-deficit consumers. Through the innovative use of holograms and information technology, he mapped how media and marketing maximizes the impact at a relatively low cost.

The meet was closed with the address of Mr.J.Swaminath, Director Media Buying of Carat, UAE. He profiled the ‘rapidly crowding of media in the region with 150 newspapers, 300 magazines, 75 radio stations; 600 free to air channels and millions of websites and hand-held screen based media windows for a demographically small but buy-rich market’ and declared that media buying has become a science needing both statistics and strategic mind to buy media smart in the crowed media market.

Gesture-based Interaction

Surface is an example of gesture-recognition computing.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGp3B_zY5JU&feature=sub]

According to Wiki (our unparalleled source of information):

Gesture recognition is a topic in computer science and language technology with the goal of interpreting human gestures via mathematical algorithms. Gestures can originate from any bodily motion or state but commonly originate from the face or hand. Current focuses in the field include emotion recognition from the face and hand gesture recognition. Many approaches have been made using cameras and computer vision algorithms to interpret sign language. However, the identification and recognition of posture, gait, proxemics, and human behaviors is also the subject of gesture recognition techniques.[1]

Gesture recognition can be seen as a way for computers to begin to understand human body language, thus building a richer bridge between machines and humans than primitive text user interfaces or even GUIs (graphical user interfaces), which still limit the majority of input to keyboard and mouse.

It can be applied to marketing and advertising solutions but recent advancements have been made for industrial and government purposes.  A recent TED event showcases these advancements and it is AWESOME!

Immersive Media For Home and Industrial Interiors

Some examples of how immersive media is applied in everyday life and things (hobbies rather).

The indoor golf is a concept that has been fine-tuned over the years and is now a more sophisticated gaming application of immersive media – a perfect example of mixing the virtual with the real.  It features double tracking technology that not only detects the direction of the ball, but also the spin that you put on it and the velocity of the ball.  It’s perfect for personal, commercial and promotional applications.

On the other hand, the interactive mirror is a step further into a more purposeful use of ubiquitous media. Developing technology that melts with the environment is key in properly integrating immersive media into everyday lives.  There are quite a number of possibilities with this kind of application: gaming, retail, multitouch, POI, POS, etc.

A New Start Up In Dubai

Dubai,UAE – PixelPlusMedia recently announced that they are setting up shop in Dubai, the world-renowned metropolis found in the United Arab Emirates.  In spite of the downturn in the economy since the recent financial crisis, they remain upbeat with the current gap in the advertising mix within the region.  “Our market study showed us that there is currently a technological gap in the ambient media market in the UAE and the region,” they say.  “As such, we feel that this is the best time for us to go into the market and introduce the latest of interactive media technologies available in the world.”[slideshow]

Composed of interactive media professionals, those who make up PixelPlusMedia share extensive experience in executing ambient branding campaigns in the Middle East, including Iran.  “Our experience shows us that the market is hungry for this type of media; and, with the current market situation, strong brands are looking to gain more ground with their audience and their markets with an effective medium,” the group added.

Veering into the concept of augmented reality, they are looking into finding different ways of integrating the virtual with reality.  “The main thing here is that we envision a market place where any form of surface can and will be transformed into a living and breathing branding medium; and, with our consultation, along with the technology that we bring in, anything is possible.”

“Our main goal is to give the general public a different branding experience that will be lasting and memorable; and, in turn, give our clients an exciting medium to communicate with their market,” asserted the group.

It does look like a promising proposition for those in the Middle East.  PixelPlusMedia brings in quite a few interesting branding technologies that include gesture-controlled media, 3D holograms and FTIR/FTLR-enabled Multitouch screens, which are precedents of game-changing GUI (Graphic User Interface), 3D Content Production and advanced programming.

Let's try something new.
