Turning Coca-Cola bottle caps into currency for human connection, enabling blue-collar workers to call their families.

01 / Challenge
In 2014, Coca-Cola wanted to connect more deeply with South Asian blue-collar workers — one of the UAE's largest consumer segments, and one largely ignored by mainstream advertising. Generic promotions and giveaways had never worked. Research revealed something deeper: these workers had left their families behind for the promise of a better life, and international calls were a luxury most simply couldn't afford. The gap between them and home was measured in minutes they couldn't pay for.
02 / Idea
We built a phone booth that didn't take money. It took Coca-Cola bottle caps. Insert a cap, get connected to your family back home — free of charge, for three minutes. The idea took Coca-Cola's 'Open Happiness' brand promise and made it literal: a small act of generosity, delivered through an object already in their hands, that gave workers something no salary increase could buy — the sound of a voice they missed.

03 / Execution
Pixel Plus Media designed, engineered, fabricated, and installed the phone booths across labour camps throughout the UAE. Each unit integrated a custom cap-recognition mechanism with a live telecoms system capable of routing international calls — reliably and at scale, in harsh outdoor conditions. An accompanying film was produced documenting real workers making real calls: unscripted, unfiltered, and deeply human. That film was released without a single dirham of paid media — and travelled the world on its own.
04 / Results
The online film generated over 3 million organic YouTube views in a single week. The campaign was covered by the Wall Street Journal and The New Yorker. It reached audiences in over 100 countries — entirely through earned media. Back on the ground, the booths logged over 140,000 minutes of calls and drove a 13.55% increase in brand love among the target audience.
